Nichols' work earns full-time position at Selma Times-JournalKatie Nichols didn’t have to go far to get where she wanted to be. Finding a job in the field many college seniors majored in can be a daunting task, but Nichols needed to look no further than the corner of Broad and Water in her hometown of Selma, Ala. “I feel comfortable here,” said Nichols, public safety reporter for The Selma Times-Journal and selmatimesjournal.com. “I know everybody and feel like I’m giving back.” A graduate of John T. Morgan Academy in Selma, Nichols and her mother live in rural Dallas County. She has a sister, and her brother, Paul, is a crewman on an Alaskan fishing boat and writes a blog for selmatimesjournal.com, proof that ink flows through the veins of the Nichols family. Scheduled to finish her bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Alabama in December, Nichols worked as an intern at the Times-Journal a few years ago and her strong work ethic and willingness to take on a challenging beat earned her a full-time job offer. “I enjoy all this. I wasn’t sure about the public safety beat, but after a couple of days, I really liked it,” she said. |
