The Newspaper

History
Boone Newspapers purchased the Central Alabama Independent Advertiser on Aug. 15, 1975.

Mike Kelley was named publisher at the time and continues in that role today. The Central Alabama Independent Advertiser evolved into The Independent Advertiser and eventually The Clanton Advertiser.

We increased publication to twice-weekly in 1978, to thrice-weekly in 1991 and to five times a week in November of 1998 and now publish six times a week (Tuesday through Saturday mornings).

The newspaper's office is located at 1109 Seventh Street North in Clanton, Ala., which is the county seat of Chilton County. In addition to printing six times a week, we also publish The Extra, an advertising supplement that is delivered to non-subscribers every Wednesday.

In 2002, The Advertiser also finished construction of a new press and mailroom facility featuring a newly refurbished Goss Community press.

Market
The economy of the Clanton and Chilton County area is diverse. Chilton County has had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state in recent years, staying around 4 percent on the annual average.

It is a commuter county to jobs in the nearby Birmingham and Montgomery markets, whose unemployment rates are even lower. As those two areas have filled up, residents there are starting to move to the middle, meaning Chilton County.

The growth, Interstate 65 and local resources have started bringing in local jobs and economic growth. Two automotive supplier plants have opened in recent years, as well as a food distribution warehouse. Agriculture still plays an important role in the county. About 3,000 acres of peach farms bring in between $5 million to $7 million a year for the county.

Clanton has a 60-bed hospital with 24-hour emergency care. CSX Railroad comes through the county, and the county airport is located in Clanton.

Awards
The Clanton Advertiser is a consistent winner in the Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest each year. Recently, the staff of The Advertiser was honored with being selected by American Cancer Society for best coverage for the staff's coverage of the Chilton County Relay for Life. The special section produced by the staff covering the event placed first in the Southeast, beating out many larger newspapers.
